Red Cactus (红仙人掌)

The red cactus above was again shot with the largest aperture of my kit lens (f5.6 at telephoto end), but it was intentionally shifted from beside the wall to a distance further away from the wall. The further distance from the cactus to the wall helps to blur up the background further. With a blur background, attention is drawn to the subject, the cactus, thus making it stand out. This is another technique that I have just learned and experimented.

Like a cactus that is capable of storing water for later use, we should build up the habit of acquiring knowledge and skill whenever possible for future use.

  4. MT,
I'm using Canon EF S18-55 IS lens. Any recommendation of better lens for close-up view?

  5. If you are interested in macro photography, a good lens would be the Canon 100mm f2.8. But not cheap though.

  6. You can check out the macro lens at www.shashinki.com and this is where I purchase my lens. They offer quality products and good service too (in terms of product knowledge and customer service). The more expensive macro lens is the L series one. But the non L series will do..unless you have the budget for the L-series :)

  7. Mei Teng,
The lens is more expensive than the camera. I'll stick to the existing standard lens for now until I get bored of it...

Thanks for the good advice anyway...

  9. I wish to add (after enjoying this hobby for the past year and a half)this advice of not rushing into buying lens and accessories. Get what is necessary such as filters to protect your lens, circular polariser (to give better contrast when shooting outdoors and not to be used indoors), cleaning solution for your gear and extra batteries (optional). Once you learn to use your gear and are more familiar and have an idea of what you like to shoot then can consider other types of lens you may wish to add to your collection.

Photography is something that takes time and much effort. I started out shooting alone and still very much prefer shooting alone.

    Mei Teng,
I am definitely not the sort of person who will follow the trend of buying and end up with lots of white elephants.

I have much to learn at the moment and there is still no immediate need to buy accessory...
